BlackRadioIsBack.com Video: The Bots

What's up this fourth day of Black History Month in the U.S. from the BlackRadioIsBack.com/FuseBox Radio Broadcast crew!

I just wanted to share a bit of music off the radar (hopefully soon to a TV, radio and other media outlet near you) with the young, talented fellas of the AfroPunk group The Bots.

The Bots represent California and consists of members Mikaiah Lei (16) and Anaiah Lei (13).

These young brothers of Afro-Caribbean descent and Chinese descent dropped their self-titled album independently a few months ago via the web through Napster, iTunes, Rhapsody & eMusic.

In between going to school (Mikaiah with High School and Anaiah with Middle School), the young mulit-instrumentalists spend time recording, writing original music for future performances and releases and touring all over the U.S., including this year's AfroPunk Music Festival with headliner Saul Williams.

The Bots sound has a lot of Punk, Ska, Rock and Reggae Music influences and a lot of energy for heads to jam to.

With groups as diverse as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bad Brains and Bob Marley being a few of their influences, I think these young men can definitely make it happen on the mainstream stage if given a proper chance in the future.

Check out some of their recent videos below as well as copping a download of their single "Stop" and let us know what you think of The Bots and their dope Black Rock sounds...enjoy!

Happy Black History Month 2010! (and 4 Dope Black History Documentary Videos to Watch)

What's good to our BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast family!

Folks are a bit behind on new posts here on the site due to both work reasons (9 to 5 and some music project in the lab are hitting me HARD) as well as some personal reasons (my Mama had to get thyroid surgery but is now doing pretty well and some other fam issues), but now are back on track! :)

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Black History Month for 2010 (and for my U.K. Peoples, early wishes since y'all celebrate it in October)!

After a year into U.S. President Barack Obama's presidency, it's pretty damned obvious we're FAR from being in a "post-racial" America.

There is still an insane lack of complete acceptance of People of Black descent worldwide being human beings (see some of the still ignorant things said about the Haiti Earthquake tragedy on your local mainstream news channel), much less our positive contributions to the world throughout history.

As much as some - to be very nice - short-sighted people who always want to believe that everything is all good and wash away ANY distinguishing recognition of Blacks in America (especially so) and the Diaspora, Black History Month is still a vitally needed time for not just Black People, but people all over the United States and world to reflect not just on various individual's achievements from a Paul Robeson to Malcolm X or Fannie Lou Hamer to Sojouner Truth, but on our basic commonalities as human beings.

EVERYONE can be proud of their various ethnic and cultural heritages (otherwise, why would there be things like Hispanic History Month, Women's History Month, etc.) and the struggles groups of people have made since the beginning of time to grow and have it not be a threat to those who are secure in themselves.

The diverse contributions of Black Culture from all over the African Diaspora (political, academic, artistic, etc.) to the world should be celebrated and acknowledged all day, everyday - not just for a regulated 28 days a year (or 29 on a leap year). :)

Here are just a few resources for Black History Month for everyone to check out as well as some pretty cool documentaries and short videos off the beaten path available for viewing free on the web to jump the month of right this decade...hope y'all enjoy them!

BlackRadioIsBack.com Video #2: Amos 'n' Andy: Anatomy of a Controversy

BlackRadioIsBack.com Video #3: Speakers for the Dead

Description via NFB:
This documentary reveals some of the hidden history of Blacks in Canada. In the 1930s in rural Ontario, a farmer buried the tombstones of a Black cemetery to make way for a potato patch.

In the 1980s, descendants of the original settlers, Black and White, came together to restore the cemetery, but there were hidden truths no one wanted to discuss. Deep racial wounds were opened.

Scenes of the cemetery excavation, interviews with residents and re-enactments--including one of a baseball game where a broken headstone is used for home plate--add to the film's emotional intensity.

BlackRadioIsBack.com Video: Democracy Now - "Naomi Klein Issues Haiti Disaster Capitalism Alert: Stop Them Before They Shock Again"

Good Morning BlackRadioIsBack.com and FuseBox Radio Broadcast family,

I saw this episode of Democracy Now! with a very insightful interview with author Naomi Klein (The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism - an EXCELLENT book) and had to share it with everyone, especially since the points to me are so valid.

What IS going to happen once the first recovery efforts are complete in Haiti and it is time to rebuild (and possibly finally build some solid infrastructure)?

We've seen time and time again that some corporations, governments and others try to completely take advantage of an area after natural/unnatural disasters through fraud, overcharging for services, not working with local people & governments fairly and so forth (the last time we've seen it here in the States was with Hurricane Katrina).

People are going to definitely have to stay on our toes to do what we can to such thing won't happen again - whether via calling people out, research, spreading the word, etc.

Here's a brief summary of what the video is about - please check it out and let us know what you think when you can:
Journalist and author Naomi Klein spoke in New York last night and addressed the crisis in Haiti: “We have to be absolutely clear that this tragedy—which is part natural, part unnatural—must, under no circumstances, be used to, one, further indebt Haiti and, two, to push through unpopular corporatist policies in the interest of our corporations. This is not conspiracy theory. They have done it again and again.”

Our extended commentary this week focused on the current tragedy with the earthquakes in Haiti, the importance of the country, it's history and ties to the international Black/African Diaspora and our hopes and expectations of the help that needs to be given to the people of the country from individuals to the government and other organizations.

We also talked about the recent dustup with issues of Race & current U.S. President Barack Obama with recent comments by Senator Harry Reid and former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, a tad about the entire "Is Jay-Z Illuminati" mini-controversy in music circles (and if he is, does it really mean ANYTHING) along with other things here and there.

For this week's show, we have an great interview (phoned in before Haitian earthquake information was known) with the independent producer/MC duo Fly Gypsy (http://www.FlyGypsy.com), representing the Washington, DC area here in the States.

Some of the things we talked about included their musical influences, how they met up, the grind as an independent artist and how best to go about doing music business while keeping the creative side intact, their recently dropped Change for A Dollar EP & music videos (one of which, "You", just premiered on MTV Jams), past mixtape projects, future tours and plans along with a lot of other things!

R.I.P. To Black Music Legend, R&B and Soul Music Singer Teddy Pendergrass

2010 is starting off not great at all for the Black Music & Entertainment community with the passing of Soul Music Legend Teddy Pendergrass.

In the age where people Tweet that someone has died as a joke or to get attention, I thought this was a messed up hoax after a day of getting steadily depressing news about the earthquake aftermath in Haiti.

Unfortunately, this was not true.

For those who didn't have parent's or older family members play his records to death from his solo career or with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (like my family) and get a chance to absorb the sounds of his powerful, strong yet smooth Philadelphia Soul voice on lots of music tracks, Teddy P joints have sampled in a lot of your favorite Hip-Hop songs in the past few decades.

His stylistic range and style have influenced numerous male R&B & Soul Music singers through the years, most recently in the Hip-Hop generation with Jahiem.

And for the group of people who are now all about sales and Soundscan being the sign of true music success, Teddy Pendergrass' selling of 10 consecutive platinum albums in a row during the pre-internet/big money marketing budget era should give him a first or second look.

In the mainstream radio age where even Soul & R&B music is going through a slow road to being contrived and with little feeling, an artist like Teddy Pendergrass will be deeply missed.

Sincere prayers and Condolences from the BlackRadioIsBack.com & FuseBox Radio Broadcast family to the family, friends and fans of Teddy Pendergrass.
Philly-born Soul Singer Pendergrass Dies At Age 59

Silky voiced soul singer Teddy Pendergrass, whose hits "Turn Off the Lights" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" set the mood for millions of fans, has died at age 59.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died Wednesday night at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Pendergrass' son said his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery."

The elder Pendergrass was born March 26, 1950 in Philadelphia. His mother, who raised him, discovered his talent when he started singing in church when he was only 2 1/2 years old, according to his Web site.

He got his start as a drummer and in 1969 hooked up with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

He moved to the front as a vocalist soon after, and by 1971, the group had signed with legendary producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff at Philadelphia International Records.

The group scored such hits as "The Love I Lost," "Yesterday I Had the Blues" and "Wake Up, Everybody."

Pendergrass broke out on his own in 1976, and became the first black male singer in history to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums, according to his Web site.

After playing to sold-out shows around the globe, tragedy struck in 1982 when he lost control of his Rolls-Royce and crashed on Wissahickon Drive, resulting in severe spinal chord damage and paralyzing him from the waist down.

"They don't fill you with hope after something like this," Pendergrass told the Daily News in 2007.

"They tell you that your life is going to be shorter, but they don't know by how much."

He spent six months in a hospital after the accident but returned to recording the next year with the album "Love Language."

He released in 1985 "Working It Back," which was followed by "Joy" (1988), "Truly Blessed" (1990) "A Little More Magic" (1993) and "You and I" (1997).

Gamble and Huff, in a joint statement, said that Pendergrass was "one of the greatest artists that the music industry has ever known, and there hasn't been another one since.

"We've lost our voice and we've lost our best friend, but we're thankful for what we had," the statement read. "It was beautiful. He was one of the best."

Earlier, Huff reminisced during an interview aired on WDAS-FM about Pendergrass' first solo performance, which was at a club in California.

"That night I saw the coming of a superstar," Huff said. "When Teddy walked out on the stage, he didn't even open his mouth and the place went crazy with screaming females. He was just so dynamic, and when he started singing, he just blew them away."

Gamble noted what it was about Pendergrass that drove all those ladies crazy.

"He was tall dark and handsome," Gamble said. "He had a magnetism about him . . . He was injured 28 years ago and hung in there a long time. He was strong as a bull."

WDAS was playing a tribute to the late soul star Wednesday night.

Fans took to Facebook to lament the loss of one of R&B's greats.

Poster Michael Collins said: "This is a very sad day. Today, music will stand still for a King! God bless your soul . . . A piece of my history is now gone."

Another poster, Delia Desbois, wrote: "I've spent the most beautiful moments of my life thanks to his music . . . We will miss you. Rest in Peace."

Questlove of the Roots posted on Twitter: "sad loss. just heard the immortal Teddy Pendergrass has just gone to a better place. Soul will never be the same."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bio
My mission for BlackRadioIsBack.com, as the official blog of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast, is to bring back the spirit of Black Radio via the Internet and the World Wide Web.

In the past few years, the term, mission and mentality of "Black Radio" in the United States has been at the very least ignored and that the worst, totally disregarded, disrespected and shunned.

In my mind, Black Radio at its best is & will always be the format that brings to listeners:

1. A balanced combination of diverse & interesting music in multiple formats – after all Black Radio was the format that first exposed Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues, Rock Music - yes, Rock and Roll has Black American musical foundations - do the history, Gospel and Hip-Hop music to the masses.

2. A quality mix of news, interviews and commentary to the Black American community (and to anyone else interested) - editorial, political, health, social, etc.

3. A mission to truly connect with its listener community on multiple fronts Black Radio, in most of the mainstream airwaves, has been taken over by what's called "urban radio", "contemporary urban radio", etc.

It seems that with this format, what most stations, radio hosts and mixers do is keep things in a very narrow vision of what the Black American cultural experience is supposed to be like and how its represented - basically, watering things down.

For example:

* When you hear the same joint for the 1,000,000th time on the radio and you know the artist has an album release (or multiple releases) out that you can at least TRY to hear more tracks from before a 3 month period OR you always hear the same music artists in constant rotation = NOT quality Black Radio

* When "Old School" music is defined as being from 5 years ago and/or not acknowledging music from the past = NOT quality Black Radio

* When there is only one viewpoint of what Black America and Black Americans represent (either straight 24-7 criminality without consequences or creativity or only the civil rights generation is great with everyone else not under that being subpar) = NOT quality Black Radio

* Putting on the same sound effect and/or screaming over 10 times in a row for a 3 minute song that is not even hot = NOT quality Black Radio

This list can go on for days…

BlackRadioIsBack.com will have music audio & videos from all over the world along with reviews (for both mainstream and independent artists), written and audio interviews with various folks in the community (music artists, authors, businesspeople, activists, etc.), book, magazine and movie reviews and editorials.

BlackRadioIsBack.com will also be a location where others who are promoting the spirit of Black Radio will also be represented and highlighted.

I hope that everyone enjoys the site and gets stimulated by the true Black Radio Experience!

Peace,

_______________

INFO & DESCRIPTION ABOUT DJ FUSION & THE FUSEBOX RADIO BROADCAST (UPDATED: January 2009):

Umm, OK....I'm DJ Fusion (real name: Mary Nichols), a short (5 feet tall even), above average looking (I think at least a "B", even if a low one....) African-American female DJ and graduate at Rutgers University (c/o 2001) with a degree in American Studies and a minor in History.

I am a Radio, Club and Mixtape DJ, with my main music focus for my DJ sets ranging from genres of Hip-Hop (Independent & Commerical), Breakbeats, Reggae, Funk, Acid Jazz, Soul, House, Disco, DC GoGo, Electronica, Rock and Classics - Black Music in general.

Since its foundation in 1998 - when I created the show as an undergraduate student at Rutgers University - New Brunswick in New Jersey - the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast has been around to expose the absolute BEST of Hip-Hop & Soul Music from all over the world (and Black Music in general) along with bringing quality interviews, news, and commentary. Along with fellow co-host/DJ/Producer Jon Judah (added on as part of the FuseBox Radio crew in 2004), we try our best to stick to that mission and bring great sounds, vibe and content to the masses.

From it's roots at Rutgers University Radio (WRSU 88.7 FM), the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast is a mixshow that has spread to the following internet radio stations and outlets (as of January 2009):

Under the business, FuseBox Media LLC, I also engage freelance article writing for various Internet and paper publications and do various music projects (music production, mixtape hosting & production, etc.).

The official blog of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast was established in October of 2007, BlackRadioIsBack.com (http://www.BlackRadioisBack.com).
