Bio
Indian-American clothing designer and entrepreneur Swati Argade's mission is to create inspired, distinctive, high-quality clothing that enhances the beauty of women, and to nurture and support the people who make them.

Raised in the American South, she was trained as a dancer specializing in the exquisite art of South Indian classical dance. She moved to New York in 1998 and gained recognition for her stunning performances at such venues as the Asia Society, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Kitchen. Swati's career in fashion began as a costume designer, initially making costumes for her own performances, and then for other dance, film, and theater productions. She soon realized her capacity for costume design could be translated into ready-to-wear clothing, and designed her first pieces for herself. Invariably, perfect strangers would stop her on the street to ask, "Where did you get that?" She quickly developed a following of individual clients, and decided to launch her first collection to stores in Fall 2004. By Summer 2005, her clothes were selling nationwide. Swati Argade now sells in many stores in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Shelter Island, Chicago, Texas, and Virginia.

Swati chooses fabrics and affects that help to sustain the maintenance and development of local economies and ancient traditions like weaving, embroidery, and dyeing. "It became very important to me early on that my clothes had to be made with the producers and their history in mind. Their skill and participation are making this endeavor possible. The weavers and the tailors are as much a part of the production chain as I am."

Her Spring/Summer 2005 line belle khadi incorporated hand-woven South Indian fabrics with strong-lined silhouettes to create a look that was both ethnic and traditional as well as cosmopolitan and modern. Her Spring/Summer 2006 collection Bengali Girl contains a sunny palette of spring colors while pulling from modern and traditional silhouettes in Indian and American fashion. Her Fall 2006 collection Novella explores Indian historical and Western literary traditions, combining structured tailoring and men's suiting fabrics with the softness of velvet, corduroy, and naturally dyed cottons. In 2007, she launched her eco-friendly jersey line SHIFT BY SWATI made from modal printed with graphic and traditional prints in playful and easy silhouettes.

In 2008, Indian retail giant FabIndia commissioned her to create a youthful and contemporary collection that marries Indian cooperative textile with the spirit of the modern Indian woman. FabIndia, a household name among the Indian middle-class, is the largest seller of cooperative textile housewares and garments, known for their microfinancing projects and commitment to developing and sustaining indigenous textile traditions. The collection currently sells across the country in over 50 stores.

Swati's clothing appeals to a wide range of personal styles, blending ethnic and bohemian aesthetics with an urban refinement and sophistication.

What advice would you offer a non-green person?
By making choices that are cruelty-free for both the earth and humanity means that you are ensuring a cleaner and more ethical planet for your children. If not for your children then for your yourself. Remember: What goes around, comes around.
Name a couple of your green actions.
*I am a diligent recycler.
*Whenever possible, I take public transportation.
*I always keep a reusable tote bag in my purse for impulse grocery shopping so I don't have to use plastic or paper bags.
*I eat very little meat so as not to contribute to one of the most wasteful and polluting industries on our planet: The breeding of livestock for our dining tables.
*All Swati Argade clothing is assembled in fair trade factories and all fabrics are sourced from indigenous communities to help further the growth of their economies and to keep their art forms alive.
