Recycling Rain

The recent episodes of bitter cold rain got me to thinking of ways to re-use this natural resource, which normally sweeps pollutants into our sewer systems or goes to waste in other ways. With people around the world desperate for water, how can we take advantage of our bounty and find ways it can benefit us and the environment?

On a trip to Montreal, I stood outside a science museum and examined a rain garden. The concept was new to me; based on the name, I thought the garden was… Continue

Another sustainable dance club?

A few months back, I wrote an entry on what I believed was the world’s first sustainable dance club launched by the Sustainable Dance Club company in Amsterdam. Club Watt, which opened in September 2008, features technology that allows dancers' moves to churned into energy that can feed the club. In addition to this piezo-electric effect," the club boasts specific reduction… Continue

Is this even possible? I thought plastic was one of the world's most harmful and synthetic materials in the world! A visit to the Greenware website explained this new technological phenomenon:

If they can be vegan, so can you

While some people understand my dietary choices, others are amazed, confused, or even repulsed by my veganism. I've gotten reactions from, "Why in the world would you ever do that?" to "I could absolutely never ever even think about doing that. I need my meat and cheese." Most of those who say the latter admit they've never tried being vegan. How do you know you can't do something if you've never tried?

Nowadays, more people are aware… Continue

Saving Trees by Downloading Your Tunes

While some mourn the dying CD industry just as some mourned the dying record industry, a recent study conducted by Stanford and Carnegie Mellon shows the environmental advantages of downloading music versus purchasing CD's. The Eco-Friendly Traveler

August is the most popular month for vacations. As you travel, consider doing the following to help the environment as you explore it:

PREPARE THE HOME

Before you leave, unplug everything and turn off your circuit breakers (except for the switch that powers the burglar alarms). If you have a gas water heater, set it to "pilot" or "vacation" mode.

AVOID PLANES

I'm thinking of moving, and the National Resources Defense Council's recently published list of America's top 15 most sustainable cities will influence my decision. Seattle, a city I never even considered calling home, was named #1, followed by San Francisco, Portland (Oregon), and Oakland. New York came in at #12 (is this a surprise?), Los Angeles was #13, and Dallas squeezed in at last… Continue
