Mushroom tech rocks again at TEDGlobal. Mushroom tech? Yes. For the mycophiles among us, the upcoming July 14 Different by Design TEDGlobal session in Oxford, UK will feature Eben Bayer, co-inventor of MycoBond, an organic adhesive that comes from mycelium mushroom and turns agriwaste into a foam-like material for packaging and insulation. Ecovative Designs produces this sustainable product and two others. EcoCradle, a hi density packaging material & Greensulate, a fire-retardant insulation. Both products rate equal to comparable common materials. Both are compostable, require less energy to produce than extruded polystyrene foam, Styrofoam and derive from mushroom material.
Stay alerted here for TEDGlobal videocast link. Until then, here is other mushroom tech, for goodness' sake.
In 2008, Paul Stamets delivered a talk casually mentioning a mycelium mushroom organism in Oregon that is 2,400 acres large. Stamets described mycelium mushroom as "soil magicians", a super-kingdom that joins animalia and fungi and Earth's natural Internet. This talk lays out a litany of industrial applications stemming from mushroom patents. Possibly one of the world's most pressing problems is simply a mushroom solution.
