Founders Jennifer Peters (an anthropologist who develops health products for rural communities) and Stephane Helary (an ecologist studying plant biochemistry and conservation) based the line on botanical tribal traditions. It launched this year.
In the products’ table of contents? Sustainably harvested Sub-Saharan plants, such as antioxidant-packed rooibos and marula oil, skin-firming kigelia fruit, soothing aloe ferox, antiaging baobab, and omega fatty acid-rich manketti nut and Kalahari melon oil.
For thousands of years, the people of Southern Africa have relied solely on indigenous plants to protect their skin from the desert sun and harsh climates. Savane Organic Skincare blends this ancient traditional knowledge with modern green science to bring you Africa’s unique botanicals in their most potent form.
Rich in some of the most powerful natural antioxidants and deep penetrating essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9), Savane skincare range restructures, regenerates, and revitalises your skin, protecting it against premature aging and restoring its natural balance.
GOOD PRODUCE MAKES GOOD PRODUCTS
From the open plains of the savannah, across the vast Kalahari Desert, to Africa’s lush tropical forests, we source only the purest, highest quality natural ingredients. Savane formulations are safe for you and the environment and contain some of the most powerful natural anti-aging actives available to deliver the maximum benefits to your skin.
Carefully crafted by experts and using the latest developments in green chemistry, Savane certified organic formulations are free of harmful and toxic chemicals. We do not use animal or genetically modified ingredients, mineral oils, colour additives, synthetic fragrances or controversial preservatives.
Savane products are certified natural and organic by Ecocert (an independent international certifying agency). Savane products contain between 68 and 95% certified organic ingredients and are made of 99.9 to 100% natural origin ingredients. The products that are 99.9% natural contain a small amount of synthetic preservatives necessary to ensure the stability and quality of Savane products. These synthetic preservatives are approved by Ecocert.
TWICE A DAY CONTRIBUTE TO A BETTER WORLD
Africa contains a quarter of the world’s biodiversity. Southern Africa alone has more than 30,000 species of indigenous plants that have been used by Africans for centuries.
Both in Africa and worldwide, biodiversity is declining at an alarming pace, with the extinction of an estimated 2,000 species each year (www.wwf.org). This loss of biodiversity threatens both our livelihood and that of Africa’s rural communities.
Savane believes in ethical sourcing, which respects and protects the traditional knowledge and intellectual property of local communities, assures equitable sharing of benefits and helps conserve biodiversity. Savane is a member of PhytoTrade Africa, and in the process of becoming a member of the Union for Ethical Biotrade.
RECYCLE, REDUCE & REPAIR
Savane has chosen aluminium packaging because it is unbreakable, light-weight, endlessly recyclable and protects our certified organic formulations from UV light. While aluminium takes a lot of energy to make, it uses only 5% of this energy to recycle. Also because it weighs so little, fuel consumption is greatly reduced when transporting. All our packaging has been approved by Ecocert as safe and eco-friendly.
Wherever possible Savane has also done away with outer packaging. To reduce our use of paper, our bottles have no outer boxes. Where the use of paper or cardboard is necessary, Savane has chosen recyclable cardboard or locally sourced paper made from renewable sugar cane pulp.
Available at Shen Beauty, 315 Court Street, between Degraw and Sackett Streets, Cobble Hill (718-576-2679 or shen-beauty.com/), $42-$105. For more information, go to: Savane Organic Skincare
