Back in June I mentioned that I was a presenter at the Media That Matters film festival at HBO studios here in New York and have been meaning to share this deeply touching documentary entitled "The Next Wave" that won the Jury Award.
I can only start by saying "imagine the island of Manhattan sinking and it's residents having to start over and be assimilated into other societies" well this is really happening and Jennifer Redfearn and Tim Metzger's film "The Next Wave" follows the Carteret islanders as they attempt to relocate their community for the third time risking the loss of their cultural identity. Carteret, located off the Pacific island of New Guinea the islanders are forced to move because rising sea levels have polluted their fresh water wells with salt water and erosion is a growing problem due to higher tides. The drowning of the island of Carteret is not the fault of the Carteret Islanders, but ours. By mid-century, climate change could displace up 250 million people. All I half to say is "grab your life vest, suckas" or man up and do the right thing.
Look out for Redfearn's feature-length film, “Sun Come Up,” on the Carteret's.
Check the video report Redfearn produced for the Pulitzer Center:
